Wolcott Street in Andover, MA

Andover Real Estate

With its classic New England atmosphere, in scenery and spirit, Andover is a town that will forever hold a special place in its residents’ hearts. This charming community blends the best features of history, culture, economy, education and recreation to provide a fantastic quality of life not found in many towns with a population less than 35,000. It is not hard to see why the song, “America,” was written by Samuel Francis Smith while he was living here in 1831.

Andover was a mill town by the mid-1700s, and factory workers manufactured gunpowder during the U.S. Revolutionary War for the Continental Army. From this humble beginning, the town reinvented itself several times to stay ahead of the times and provide settlers with a flourishing economy. Andover and its residents have played important roles throughout the nation’s history including the founding of Phillips Andover Academy, the nation’s oldest incorporated boarding school, in 1778. The former Andover Theological Seminary, known presently as the Andover-Newton Theological School, was established in the community at the turn of the 19th century. Andover was also the home of Harriet Beecher Stowe, an anti-slavery abolitionist and author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”
Phillips Academy in Andover, MA

From a mill town to an industrial hub to a modern day residential community with a vibrant economic center, Andover has maintained a flourishing job market supported by an educated workforce. This diversity contributes greatly to the appeal of the area with such businesses as high-tech companies, research facilities, educational institutions and various service industries. Graduates and students receive a superior education from the area’s public and private schools that prepare them for the workforce. Andover Public Schools are considered among the finest in the state. Private and parochial options include Phillips Academy, which is an internationally renowned college preparatory school. This is important for many students who grow up near such celebrated institutions as Harvard University, MIT, Tufts University, Boston University and the University of Massachusetts.

When residents are not working or studying, Andover provides an endless list of activities to enhance the quality of life in the community. The town gathers to celebrate many holidays including the 4th of July with a pancake breakfast, “Horribles” parade and fireworks. “Art in the Park” is another popular event where regional artists display and sell their artwork. Residents also join together throughout the year in support of various community fundraising events. One such popular event is “ClownTown,” an annual carnival that raises funds for area youth programs. For those who want to get in touch with nature, an extensive network of trails linking conservation lands and parks throughout the community have preserved natural settings for hiking, bird watching and cross-country skiing. If that wasn’t enough, Andover also has many active community service clubs, social organizations, two private country clubs and more.
